Drew Barrymore Is ‘Excited’ To Take On Activist Role In ‘Whales’: ‘I’m Going To Pour Myself Into It’

Since we have to wait a few extra days to wet our RomCom appetites with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long’s R-rated romance “Going the Distance,” we’re holding our “Drew and Justin talk romance” items for the coming weeks.

But to hold you over in the meantime, we bring you news of Drew’s “Whale” movie (not to be confused with Hayden Panettiere’s “The Cove”).

When we caught up with the actress during the press day for “Going the Distance,” we asked her a few questions about her upcoming projects, namely rumored involvement with the “Wizard of Oz” sequel, “Surrender Dorothy,” which unfortunately she couldn’t talk about, but also the upcoming “Whales” (a.k.a. “Everybody Loves Whales”).

“I’m going to do that this fall in Alaska,” she said of the film, which is based on the 1989 book: “Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event.”

Will this film be anything like “The Cove”? “No, it’s a true story that happened in the ’80s,” she said. “It’s a really really amazing story and I’m really excited about going to do it.” Drew is set to play a mammal-loving Greenpeace activist (a role we don’t think will be too much of a stretch for the seemingly warm and friendly star).

“I’m going to pour myself into it,” she promised. And we imagine she will!

What do you think of Drew’s role in the film? Is the subject matter to similar to “The Cove”?

‘Everybody Loves Whales’ to be Filmed in Alaska

Apparently one of Drew’s upcoming films, Everybody Loves Whales is set to be filmed in Alaska. Check it out:

A production company plans to begin shooting “Everybody Loves Whales,” a $30 million movie starring Drew Barrymore, this September in Alaska, the executive producer said Friday.

The film is based on the 1988 attempt to rescue three gray whales trapped by sea ice near Barrow, though the majority of filming will take place in Anchorage. Barrymore plays a Greenpeace worker while John Krasinski — Jim from NBC’s “The Office” — portrays a small-town news reporter covering the story.

Drew Barrymore to direct ‘Oz’ sequel?

No official word has been given yet but it’s always interesting to hear about Drew being in the talks for a new project.

She tried her hand at directing last year with the little-seen roller derby comedy Whip It!, but now Drew Barrymore will attempt to refresh a classic: The Wizard of Oz. The Golden Globe-winning actress is reportedly set to direct a sequel to the 1939 film called Surrender Dorothy, which follows Dorothy’s great-great granddaughter as she tries to protect Earth and Oz from the (presumably resurrected) Wicked Witch of the West with the help of those famous ruby slippers. No word yet from Barrymore on the project.

Co-stars in “Everybody Loves Whales” Announced!

News have been a bit slow lately but here’s an article from Collider which tells us that Drew’s co-stars in Everybody Loves Whales, among others, will be Ken Kwapis and John Krasinski. Some new information about the movie is also featured.

John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore are set to star in director Ken Kwapis’ (License to Wed) Whales. Universal Pictures hopes to shoot this fall – depending on Krasinski’s Office schedule. The movie is based on a real event from 1988 when a trio of California gray whales got trapped under the ice in the Arctic Circle.

Krasinski will play a small town newspaper reporter who breaks the story. Barrymore plays a Greenpeace activist, and they turn the potential tragedy into an international story. The incident created a temporary Cold War thaw as President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev found a common cause. They interceded to save the whales.

Since certain countries hunt whales and the magnificent creatures are still threatened (how quickly everyone forgot what Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home taught us), I’m on board with any movie that might help save some of them in the future. Even if Ken Kwapis is directing it.
